Consultant and Educator
Phil Reedman is the principal consultant at Phil Reedman Master of Wine Pty Ltd.
Phil has spent over 39 years working in the wine industry. From his start at a Nottingham restaurant in 1982 through to today Phil continues to be captivated by wine’s endless complexity. His has been a truly varied career which has given Phil a unique and deep understanding of the world that is wine.
Phil has been involved in almost every aspect of the wine industry: picking grapes, making wine, retailing wine, importing wine, sourcing and blending wine for one of the world’s leading retailers, developing new wines and brands. Blending medal and trophy winning wines around the southern hemisphere; Phil has also worked in and visited many of the great wines regions of Europe and the USA.
This accumulation of experience helped Phil achieve his long-held ambition to pass the Master of Wine examinations. In 1996 Phil became the 218th person to achieve what is widely recognised as the wine industry’s peak professional accreditation. In 2007, after a ground-breaking nine year tenure for Tesco, based in Adelaide, Phil established his consultancy business to help wineries and retailers ‘sell more wine.’ To this end Phil works with clients to source wines and style them to market expectations; either filling an expressed requirement or else creating new products.
Working with a range of vineyard, winery, regional wine association and retail clients Phil’s diverse portfolio keeps him exposed to global trends and developments. Teaching for IMW, WSET, Barossa Wine School and his own courses for aspiring MWs, supports and develops the next generation of wine professionals and wine enthusiasts. Phil was a finalist in the Wine Communicators of Australia Best Educator of the Year Award 2017. Teaching is an important strand of Phil’s on-going professional development; crucial to staying current in the fast-evolving wine world.
Phil is a lecturer at Adelaide’s Flinders University Business School, lecturing on Wine Evaluation, Rating and Pricing. Additionally, Phil is a regular speaker at wine industry conferences, a speaker by invitation at University of Adelaide and a guest judge at the Australian Wine Research Institute’s Advanced Wine Assessment Course. A judge at regional and capital city wine shows and a previous chief judge at The Riverland Wine Show.
